The FRIEND V1 device was our first creation, offering basic functionality, but it came with some issues and limitations. To address these, we developed DevKit2. In this guide, we’ll explore the unique features of DevKit2 and how to use them with the Omi App. 🚀
Limitations of FRIEND V1:
📱 Always needed to be connected to the app
💾 No onboard memory
🔈 No speaker or dedicated button
DevKit2 overcomes these limitations. Unlike FRIEND V1, DevKit2 doesn’t need to be constantly connected to the app. You can simply turn it on and record conversations. 🎙️ Once you're done, connect the device to the app to import all conversations from DevKit2’s onboard SD card. These recordings can then be converted into memories within the app. 💡
DevKit2 also includes a programmable button that can be configured for various commands, such as, "Hey Omi, turn on the lights." 💡✨ With this, the lights in your home can be controlled through the device. While this functionality is not fully available yet, developers interested in building such features can earn sweet bounties 🏅 for their contributions. Make sure to build it and submit a pull request! 📥
Additionally, DevKit2 features a small speaker, allowing the device to provide audio feedback. 🔊 It includes a custom PCB, designed specifically to meet the product’s requirements. ⚙️
Using DevKit2 with the Omi App:
The process to connect DevKit2 is the same as with FRIEND V1. If you’re not familiar with it, simply follow the guided steps in the app to connect the device. Here, we’ll focus on the bigger picture—how to use certain features of DevKit2.
Since the device has an inbuilt SD card, recordings will be stored there when not connected to the app. To convert those conversations into memories, connect the device to the app, then navigate to Settings > Device Settings > SD Card Sync. From there, you can import all the audio files and convert them into memories. 🧠
In upcoming versions, you will be able to use the button and speaker for even more functions. When those features become available, this article will be updated to include a detailed guide on using them. Stay tuned! 😊
